Summer Holiday Time
Yep, it’s that time of year again, when people who ought to know better shoehorn themselves for many hours into tiny aircraft seats where they are unable to sleep properly and emerge at the end exhausted and starved of proper food. When they finally return home, they are in urgent need of a holiday.
This year there are certain constraints on our schedule. Both parents have work commitments which preclude a long uninterrupted period overseas. Then there is the complication of different school holidays.
Son Alex is about to start two years of International Baccalaureate studies which will require his total dedication and focus. So that he is inspired to devote himself to study, we want to show him that we take his aspirations to study sports science seriously by accompanying him to some of the universities which he could attend if his grades are good enough. As he is obsessed with basketball, that is more likely to be in North America though Loughborough in the UK and even Chinese University here in HK have not been totally ruled out. This summer we plan to spend a little over a week looking at Vancouver (UBC and Simon Fraser), Washington State, and some community colleges in California that feed into UCLA. Because his school restarts in August, we have to go in July.
As luck would have it, daughter Tiffany starts at the University of California Los Angeles campus in September. There is no point her going earlier as she would have nowhere to stay. Moreover she has plans to visit Fiji with some friends from school as a graduation trip reward for good results. She therefore joins us for a few days at the beginning of the trip, but returns early by herself to join up with mates.
That means we are obliged to have a separate trip to California in September to settle her in, but Alex won’t be able to join as he will be in school.
Somewhere in the middle of this cross Pacific zigzag nightmare, we will all go together to nearby Macao for a few days. Wish me luck!
